On Sophomore Day, the day the school honors the outgoing sophomore student athletes, the College of Central Florida baseball team run ruled the Mid-Florida Conference Champions, Santa Fe College, 9-1. Since this game had no bearing on the seeding for the Mid-Florida Conference tournament this weekend, the Pats used one pitcher each inning in the seven-inning game. Riley Huge was credited with the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. The staff combined for ten strikeouts and only gave up four hits to the powerful Saints line-up.
The Patriots (37-14, 14-9) opened the scoring in the first inning when Kyler Hultgren drove home Jackson Taylor with a single to centerfield. In the fourth inning Nicholas Calero doubled to right field and the very next batter, Edrick Felix hit his fifth home run of the season over the scoreboard to give CF a 3-0 lead. While still in the fourth inning the Pats added one more run when Kevin Kilpatrick singled home Taylor to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Patriots exploded for four more runs in the fifth inning on a Taylor RBI single and a Matthew Cedarburg three-run home run, his eight of the season. This increased the lead to 8-0 over the Saints (29-11, 18-4).
The Saints pushed across a run in the top of the seventh inning to make it 8-1 on a Zeb Marquis sacrifice fly to temporarily avoid the run rule loss. However, with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Edrick Felix launched his second home run of the game and his sixth of the season to end the game via run-rule and give the Pats some momentum heading to the Mid-Florida Conference tournament this weekend.
The Pats pounded out fourteen hits on the day with Taylor and Cedarburg collecting three hits each while Calero (double, triple) and Felix (2 HRs) each had two hits. "We did a better job not chasing pitches out of the zone and executing when we got pitches to hit." Said CF Assistant Coach, Collin McBride when asked about the Pats offensive explosion.
The Patriots are the number three seed in the Mid-Florida Conference Tournament this weekend at Seminole State College in Sanford, Florida. CF will play number four seeded St. Johns River State College in the opening game on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The winner will play game one of the three game series vs Seminole State immediately after the game. The winner of the three game series with Seminole will earn a spot in the Region 8 State Tournament in Lakeland beginning on May 5th.
