GAINESVILLE- With the match on the line, the College of Central Florida turned to standout Julymar Otero down the stretch.
Otero totaled 27 kills in the match and had three consecutive late in the tiebreaker that sparked a 4-0 run to close a 25-11, 25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 15-10 win over Santa Fe College in the first-ever volleyball match between the schools.
With the win, CF (17-5, 3-1), has now knocked off three nationally ranked teams in the span of four days.
To get there, the Patriots survived a strong effort from the Saints (20-4, 3-2) after they dominated the first two sets.
"We got too anxious there in the third set and made too many silly mistakes that we can't afford to make again," CF coach Flavia Siqueira said.
From there, Otero came up with three straight kills and Kadeeja Griffin ended the match with a block from the middle.
CF, which has played a nation's best 10 teams who have been ranked among the NJCAA Top 25, closed the first set on a 12-1 run and then scored the final four points of the second set to go ahead by two.
The Patriots looked to be cruising towards the sweep and held a 20-16 edge in the third set, but the Saints closed out things with 4-0 spurt after CF took its last lead at 23-21.
CF will return to action with another conference road game at Daytona State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Fans will be able to watch the match live here http://bit.ly/1sbHq70.
