Lady Patriots slip by rival Santa Fe

OCALA-- It wasn't pretty at times, but the College of Central Florida women's basketball team will gladly take its 50-42 win over rival Santa Fe College on Wednesday night.

The Patriots held the Saints to 22.7 percent shooting and shook off a 20.5 percent effort of their own to move to 20-4 overall and 6-0 in the Mid-Florida Conference.

CF has now won eight straight games.

Thais Oliveira (11 points, 19 rebounds, two blocks), Marcella Rocha (11 points, seven rebounds) and Brittany Grant (11 points, four rebounds) led the way for the Patriots, who won despite making just one field goal over the final 11 minutes.

The Patriots used a 7-0 run to push their lead to eight at the 11-minute mark and then made 5-of-8 free throws over the final 1:46 after the Saints got to within five.

CF outrebounded SFC 62-53 and improved to 2-0 this season against its rival.

The Patriots now hold an 11-10 edge on the Saints over the past seven seasons.

On Wednesday, the Patriots trailed by eight points early, but held SFC without a basket for a span of seven minutes late in the first half and went into halftime tied at 22.

From there, the Patriots took the lead for good with 18:04 on a three-point play by Grant.

After SFC got to within one, CF got a key 3-pointer from Rocha during its 7-0 run and established some breathing room.

The Saints, meanwhile, made just 15-of-66 shots and also struggled at the foul line with a 10-of-18 effort.

The Patriots did enough on the offensive end, keyed by a 26-19 edge on the offensive glass that translated into an 11-4 edge in second-chance points.

CF will now get set for a trip to FSC-Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Currently, FSC-J is one game behind the Patriots by virtue of CF's 75-64 win in Ocala earlier this month.
